The Mythical Foundation of Rome: Between Gods and Destiny
Since ancient times, the story of Rome's foundation has captivated generations. This legendary city, the cradle of an empire, had an origin shrouded in mysticism, mythology, and supernatural events. If you've ever wondered how Rome's history began, here we tell you the fascinating legend of Romulus and Remus.
Romulus and Remus: Sons of Gods and Exiled Princes
According to tradition, Romulus and Remus were descendants of the Trojan hero Aeneas and the god of war, Mars. Their mother, Rhea Silvia, was a Vestal Virgin who had been forced to remain celibate. However, destiny intervened, and Rhea Silvia gave birth to the twins, defying the rules set by her uncle, King Amulius, who, fearing that the children might claim the throne, ordered their death.
The She-Wolf and Rome's Destiny
The infants were placed in a basket and thrown into the Tiber River. But fortune was on their side. A she-wolf, instead of harming them, nursed and protected them in a cave on the Palatine Hill. Later, a shepherd named Faustulus found them and raised them as his own sons. Under his care, the twins grew strong, brave, and with an innate sense of leadership.
The Foundation of Rome and Remus's Tragic Fate
Upon reaching adulthood, Romulus and Remus decided to found a city in the same place where they had been saved. However, they could not agree on who would be the leader or where exactly the new city would be located. To resolve the dispute, they turned to augury, divine signs interpreted by Roman priests.
According to the most popular version, Romulus saw more birds in his sector of the sky, granting him the right to name and rule the city. Remus, angry and defiant, crossed the walls of the newly outlined city, which was interpreted as an act of aggression. In a fit of rage, Romulus killed him, becoming the sole ruler of the new city: Rome, named in his honor.
Romulus's Legacy and the Birth of an Empire
After his brother's tragic death, Romulus established the first foundations of Rome, attracting inhabitants and organizing its government. Under his leadership, the city grew and became the epicenter of a civilization that would influence the entire world.
